The Easter Cleaning: A Borrowed Gem from Passover Tradition

PD-OLD
According to ancient tradition, the three days following Palm Sunday, (that's this Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday), are set aside for the Easter cleaning. This involves a thorough top to bottom cleaning of the home, in preparation for the great feast.  This is the deepest cleaning of the whole year. Carpets, upholstery, and curtains are cleaned.  Every square inch of floors is swept and scrubbed.  Furniture is polished and cupboards are cleaned out and organized.

This tradition grew, of course, out of the ritual cleaning of the home that preceded the Passover celebration in Jewish homes.

It seems fit that our "spiritual housecleaning" in the Lenten season should be accompanied by a physical housecleaning of our dwellings.  It is right and good to make all things ready for the resurrection of our Lord.

  2. Thank for posting this! I didn't know about this tradition but I am sooo ready for some spring cleaning myself. I went ahead and started yesterday although in the Eastern Orthodox tradition our Holy Week is next week. Since I'm leaving town to stay at the church for most of that week I figure I better get a head start now to be done by then;)

  3. Love hearing this story! Once again, I find myself swamped. I'll be marking this on my calendar for next season as well.

  4. What a neat story! I had no idea! I wonder if the idea of Easter cleaning eventually broadened out and that's where we get our idea for spring cleaning. Thanks for sharing with NOBH!
