Flexible Mom Jobs: A Sampling

Firmin Baes, Sweet Dreams, PD-ART
There is certainly debate in Christian circles regarding whether a married woman ought to work. Among those who feel that the primary role of a woman is wife and mother at home, there is further debate over whether a young woman ought to prepare an "emergency net" of marketable professional education or training, in case she may be called upon to provide material support to her family. This post is not about those debates. It is simply the public posting of a table of "flexible mom job" suggestions that I have provided to some young women who have asked. The figures in the table are somewhat specific to our local area in California. Certainly, salaries and educational preparation requirements may vary across geographic areas. Readers are welcomed to comment regarding local salaries and requirements, and to suggest additional options.

At any rate, for those who are interested, here it is:

  1. I'm a cna and it has served my family well. I work on Sat. when my hubby is home. My children are never without a parent. It helps to supplement my hubbys income and allows my to be home as much as possible.

  2. I'm a pharmacy technician and I think it's a PERFECT safety net for moms. Pharm tech school is about 9 months full time, is offered at community colleges for cheaper than vocational( this gives you the license in your state), OR you can buy a practice exam book and take the exam when it's offered and that makes you certified (plus you're able to work in any state as opposed to being licensed). A lot of times pharmacy technicians get licensed but then get certified just to look better. I'm not certified though and it hasn't weighed down my job options.

I've gotten anywhere between 16-25 an hour. Most hospitals are pretty flexible with their hours. When Anna was a baby I worked ten hour shifts overnight for 7 days straight and got 7 days off. Per diem employees can usually block off any time they want without requesting time off though they do this at the expense of not having benefits.

I cant really say that I've ever had difficulties getting a job, each job search ended after a couple of weeks.

hope this helps anyone looking at pharmacy tech as an option!
